------- Additional Comments From paul@dishone.st 2005-06-03 19:14 -------
Hi Philip,

Like Hasso, I'm a bit sceptical that this is a Quagga problem. If it were, the
socket() call should fail, and we log that. You get a bind error though. This
sounds like a Solaris 8 problem. I havn't seen this problem on S10.

Is your Solaris 8 up to date wrt patches?

I havn't commited your patch to CVS, but I have cleaned up ripd slightly to
avoid duplicating rip_create_socket. Could you test CVS HEAD by any chance and
try replicate again with that? (once you've checked your machine is fully
patched up :) ).

thanks,

Yes, it dows go away if one peer (the one that does not accept connections on
179, logically) is set to passive.
Maybe the problem is in listening on more than two interfaces...I have three bgp
peers, on three sepparate interfaces...the third interface works only as passive...

------- Additional Comments From paul@dishone.st 2005-06-08 22:00 -------
Ok, I know the problem so.

It's down to perennial problems around the BGP 'dummy peer' for FSM for accepted
connections. We need to clean this up at some stage and seperate per-connection
state from peer state. At the moment we have 1 connection per peer and we hack
up a 'dummy peer' for accepted connections, which we delete once the connection
gets past OpenSent. This makes our collision detection and FSM fragile I think.
FSM should be per /connection/, and a peer can have multiple connections going
(well, two - pre-Established).

Further, we don't have a backoff timer for sending Open's, plus, iirc, we will
immediately send an Open if we receive one (if we havn't yet). This tends to
have a latching effect and cause peers to synchronise their state machines and
exacerbate collision-detection problems.

I dont have a quick fix for this, other than to use 'passive' on one side. The
connection information needs to be fixed, which is a biggish job.

http://bugzilla.quagga.net/show_bug.cgi?id=196

Summary: Zebra's view of routes differs from the kernel's for
                    IPv6 routes at least
           Product: Quagga
           Version: 0.98.3
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: High
         Component: zebra
        AssignedTo: maintainers@quagga.net
        ReportedBy: huggie-quagga@earth.li

We've seen issues where route that have been withdrawn from BGP still exist in
the linux routing table despite zebra having the correct route.

i.e. the bgpd shows:
rbi-rt2# sho ipv6 bgp 2001:470:1f01:ffff::876
[..]
  2001:668:0:3::4000:1 from 2001:668:0:3::4000:1
Origin IGP, metric 90, localpref 100, valid, external, best
[and some other less preferred routes]

zebra shows:
rbi-rt2> sho ipv6 route  2001:470::/32
Routing entry for 2001:470::/32
Known via "bgp", distance 20, metric 0, best
  Last update 00:31:27 ago
  * 2001:668:0:3::4000:1, via eth2.1044

Ok so far just as I'd expect.

Yet then when we ask the routing table we see:
huggie@rbi-rt2:~$ ip -6 ro get 2001:470::/32
2001:470:: via fe80::204:28ff:fe0c:4000 dev eth2.995 proto zebra src
2001:7f8:2:1::13  metric 1024  mtu 1500 advmss 1440

Oh also ip -6 ro list 2001:470::/32 gives:
2001:470::/32 via fe80::204:28ff:fe0c:4000 dev eth2.995 proto zebra metric
1024 mtu 1500 advmss 1440
2001:470::/32 via 2001:668:0:3::4000:1 dev eth2.1044  proto zebra  metric 1024
mtu 1500 advmss 1440

So the routes are added multiple times or at least the less preferred one isn't
removed.

I believe _hasso_ on #quagga is close to working out what's wrong but thought I
should stick this information somewhere.

I have (sadly) further examples in our live config at the moment.

I know what's wrong, but because it's bug in kernel actually, there will be no
easy fix. With price of reintroducing race condition in netlink socket you can
temporary revert (ie. apply with -R) this patch -

------- Additional Comments From philipp@open.ch 2005-06-10 17:33 -------
Hi Paul,

I've checked out the latest CVS version of 0.99.1, and installed it on a Sun
V210 running Solaris 8 02/04 (Sparc) with the recommended patch cluster of May
26, 2005. Unfortunately, it seems that the problem has not gone away yet.

There are no visible errors on startup, but the bind to the UDP port still seems
to fail. Here's what I've tried:

Command:
/usr/sbin/ripd -f /etc/ripd.conf -A 127.0.0.1 -P 0 -i /var/run/quagga/ripd.pid

quagga-0.98.3 release

Summary: IBGP prefixes may not be used with recursion lookup
           Product: Quagga
           Version: 0.98.3
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: All
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: High
         Component: zebra
        AssignedTo: maintainers@quagga.net
        ReportedBy: wawa@yandex-team.ru

Let we have 3 routers
R1 - border router running BGP only
R2 and R3 - core routers running BGP.

Let:
R1 and R2 have direct connection
R2 and R3 have direct connection too
but R1 and R2 - do not
R2 - is route-reflector
R3 - route-reflector client

Problem:
There is no way to lookup recursive prefixes (from R1) on R3 using bgp only.

There are strange restriction in zebra_rib.c. It looks like a bug.

------- Additional Comments From louis.lagendijk@gmail.com 2005-06-11 22:30 -------
rt_netlink.c does refer to inet6_ntoa (p->u.prefix6) even when ipv6 is disabled
(in calls to zlog_debug). I suppose that the check for (family == AF_INET) is
superfluous. I ran into this issue compiling quagga for a mipsel based router.

The best "solution" without fixing kernel.

It should work in most of cases, but introduces another race condition. Zebra
RIB and kernel will be out of sync if routes flagged as "proto zebra" will be
deleteted by someone else than zebra daemon. I'm working with kernel developers
to fix it in the right place - kernel.

Hello all,

I may have missed something but it doesn't look like you can block routes learnt
from OSPF based on the size of the prefix. There is this:
router ospf
 area 0.0.0.0 import-list nobiggies
ip prefix-list nobiggies seq 10 deny any

but that appears to only filter imports from other areas. Is there any chance
you could implement something so that it works from routes learnt within the
same area?

Calum

PS. I am using quagga-0.98.2 On Gentoo/amd64.

No. OSPF is link state protocol. All routers in area have to have same link

------- Additional Comments From louis.lagendijk@gmail.com 2005-06-23 22:12 -------
I compiled quagga to run on my (Asus) wireless AP, which uses uclibc. That libc
masquerades as glibc, so configure assumes that libc is ipv6 capable. I added an
additional check to configure.ac so it does work right now. Can we add this
patch to CVS?

Hello all,

We have a network with lots of /30 tap links which are advertised in ospfd.
We have a few problems with tap links.
If a new tap interface is created, and configured, and then a network statement
added to ospfd.conf, something goes wrong with this, and it requires restarting
zebra and ospfd.

http://bugzilla.quagga.net/show_bug.cgi?id=204

Summary: An snmpwalk over the OSPF-MIB craches the ospfd
           Product: Quagga
           Version: 0.98.2
          Platform: All
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: critical
          Priority: Very High
         Component: ospfd
        AssignedTo: maintainers@quagga.net
        ReportedBy: claus.klein@arcormail.de

The ospfd compiled with SMUX support craches under linux (plattform ppc and i386)
when the ospf mib is walk over a second time.

Tested with NET-SNMP version: 5.2.1

How to repead:
/usr/sbin/snmpd -c /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf -r -Lf /var/log/snmpd.log -p
/var/run/snmpd.pid
/usr/sbin/zebra -f /etc/quagga/zebra.conf -u root -g root -d
/usr/sbin/ospfd -f /etc/quagga/ospfd.conf -u root -g root -d

snmpwalk -v 2c -c public -M/usr/share/snmp/mibs/ -m OSPF-MIB localhost mib-2.14

tail ospfd.log
OSPF: Received signal 11 at 1121943105 (si_addr 0x0, PC 0x4009b8e0); aborting...

It seems it is independ of the current configuration, but here is my used config:

As you can see the message going out on eth1 contains some eth0 routes -- i dont
think it should.

------- Additional Comments From gz-quagga@poliris.com 2005-08-02 15:30 -------
Updating a route-map used in router ospf default-information originate route-
map leads to ospfd stop:

in file ospf_routemap.c / ospf_route_map_update() [line #55], this for is done:
for (type = 0; type <= ZEBRA_ROUTE_MAX; type++)

So, in case of a route-map existing on default route via:
default-information originate route-map xxxx
the type will be ZEBRA_ROUTE_MAX (as said in ospfd.h)

But in ospf_zebra.c / ospf_distribute_list_update_timer() [line #939], the
following assertion is made:
assert (type < ZEBRA_ROUTE_MAX);

So when you update the specified route-map, it stops with
2005/07/15 14:53:34 OSPF: Assertion `type < 11' failed in file ospf_zebra.c,
line 939, function ospf_distribute_list_update_timer

assertion in ospf_distribute_list_update_timer() should be "type <=
ZEBRA_ROUTE_MAX"

Thanks, alex

I'm running FreeBSD 5.4, and quagga-0.98.4. (by the way, I had to
remove "solaris" from SUBDIRS and DIST_SUBDIRS from Makefile, because if not it

Commited fix.

I'm not 100% sure (your backtrace seems to be different), but indeed one of
patches commited between 0.98.3 and 0.98.4 caused problems with setting
communities. Can you test attached patch and see whether it really fixes your
problem? If not, please reopen bug.

------- Additional Comments From hasso@quagga.net 2005-08-04 11:26 -------
Need more info. What goes wrong? Is ospfd aware of added interface ("show ip
ospf interface")? Is zebra daemon aware of new interface ("show ip
interface")? If not what is output to the log if debugging communication
between zebra daemon and kernel is enabled ("debug zebra kernel")?

------- Additional Comments From ms@ic-marl.de 2005-08-04 13:54 -------
The system consits of:
alvarez (quagga 0.98.4 on Debian Linux), Route-reflector
r16 (Cisco IOS Router)
z (zebra 0.92a on Debian Linux), Route-reflector

z announces VPNv4 routes to alvarez
r16 announces own VPNv4 routes to alvarez

Alvarez does not forward these routes to either system
but shows them with
show ip bgp vpnv4 all

neighbor x.x.x.x route-reflector-client is enabled in
standard config (needed for IPv4 and should be enough
for VPNv4 according the the ChangeLog-Entry for quagga).

Enabling route-reflector-client in the AF for any neighbor
resets the bgp-session for this neighbor, rebuilds IPv4 and
then quagga reproduceable crashes (was also described in Bug#22).
This only depends on the neighbor x.x.x.x route-reflector-client
in the AF. It does not depend on the neighbor, I enable this.

zebra needs the additional route-reflector-client, but operates
normal.

Here's the zebra config, working perfectly:

router bgp 65000
 bgp router-id zebra
 redistribute connected
 neighbor quagga remote-as 65000
neighbor quagga description QUAGGA on ALVAREZ
 neighbor quagga update-source eth0
 neighbor quagga route-reflector-client
 neighbor quagga route-map ALVAREZ-bgp-in in
!
 address-family vpnv4 unicast
 neighbor quagga activate
 neighbor quagga route-reflector-client
 exit-address-family
!

And here is the config from quagga working on IPv4:
router bgp 65000
 bgp router-id quagga
 redistribute connected
 redistribute static
 neighbor zebra remote-as 65000
 neighbor zebra update-source x.x.x.x
 neighbor zebra route-reflector-client
 neighbor r16 remote-as 65000
 neighbor r16 weight 10
 neighbor r16 route-reflector-client
 neighbor r16 distribute-list 4 out
!
 address-family vpnv4 unicast
 neighbor zebra activate
! Do not enable the next line or quagga will die when it
! has to replicate VPNv4 records
 ! neighbor zebra route-reflector-client
 neighbor r16 activate
! Do not enable the next line or quagga will die when it
! has to replicate VPNv4 records
 ! neighbor r16 route-reflector-client
 exit-address-family

This is, what "debug bgp" and "debug bgp events" produces, when enabling the RR
for r16:

Better patch.

Good catch. But fixing assert isn't enough IMHO. Some for loops need to be
fixed as well. Can you test my patch that it fixes problem for you and doesn't
introduce new ones?
