that seems sensible regardless of os behavior, since the function is
defined to take ifindex.  Currently ifindex is only used for linux,
and ifaddr for bsd ('default os' per the comments :-).  We could
enhance the function implementation to use ifindex instead for BSD;
for linux it passes both now.
