Ah, just remembered - thread.c pulls the same 'keep a spare' trick, 
see the unused list.

So it's:

- a bit of generic complexity in memory.c
   (remove any existing optimisations like the thread.c unused list)

or

- Add 'keep a spare' wherever needed.

BTW, CVS is running nicely with your zclient cleanup + memory 'quick 
cache'.
