Cause it's generally dangerous, and a bad habit to get into.

If I merge a branch of yours, then do work, and later do a 'fetch -f' 
of your branch, then I could lose my own commits..

Ok. Then do me a favour and namespace your branches into ones people 
may merge from and ones people may not.

E.g. 'public' and 'private', or 'mergeable' and 'experimental', or 
'historical' and 'volatile' - whatever you prefer. Then rename your 
branches, so, e.g. 'unnumbered' becomes 'volatile/unnumbered', etc.

I'll update my .git/remotes/jocke file and mark the refspecs for the 
'volatile/' (or whatever) namespace with '+'.

Indeed, we can make that a general Quagga git namespace convention...
